In the first weeks of Common Ground Studio the class investigated relationships of the ground floor to the commons. The Claiborne Cultural District Case Study helped define and analyze the commons.
The practice of commoning is typically organized by the users and requires active participation. The commons plays a big role in social infrastructure creating unique forms of co-ownership and co-governance. Claiborne addressed the commons thorough:
1. Flexible and modular space
2. Community engagement through art
3. Economy benefits through protocols
The activation of the ground floor under the highway fostered a field of relationships among seemingly disconnected systems and spatial conditions.
