Studio 1: Architecture Intro
Taught by: Clark Thenhaus
The concept for the Hostel design looks at the conflicting worlds of convention vs the abstract. The convention is represented by a typical extruded cube with punched windows. While the abstract is portrayed by a complex geometric vessel latched to the cube form. Even though the two forms come from different worlds they find balance and harmony together.
The building hosts time traveling magicians. The art of illusion presents itself when comparing the facade to the interior. The facade appears to be repetitive and symmetrical while the plan's organization is more scattered. There is an emphasis on tension between extrovert and introvert. The invasion of the sculptural form presents more social programs while in the typical cube extrusion are the more private service areas.
