Fall 2018
Studio 3: Library
Taught by: Randy Ruiz & Lisa Findley
The design aims to generate comfortable spaces accessible to anyone in Oakland community. Vertical louvers control entry of natural daylight and create a colorful graphic on the facade. The structure system resembles shelves while the louvers resemble books, both work together to reinforce the grid.
The library plays an important role in promoting the progress of knowledge and culture. The building is organized by a tartan grid, where three directional ‘cuts’ create the main circulation spaces. Interior plan provides double height ceilings for reading and social areas.
The building hosts programs such as auditorium, periodicals, computer spaces, reading rooms and office spaces.
The landscape is an extension of the grid, providing more public space for the community and activating the street.
